Commission for Racial Equality “Job”

“I remember judging the D&AD radio category the year after doing the Apple Tango ‘Phone Calls’ campaign. It seemed like every other ad entered had jumped on the live phone call bandwagon. Without exception they all used the device gratuitously – not because it made the message stronger, but because the writers hoped there might be a gong in it for them. What I love about ‘Job’ for the Commission for Racial Equality is that it eavesdrops on a private phone call in an entirely appropriate way. A West Indian guy calls up about a job vacancy only to be told it has already been filled. An hour later, a second guy who is obviously white calls up about the same vacancy and is asked to come in for an interview. The point is made clearly and simply; racism is alive and kicking in Britain. And the point is made so much more poignantly because the writers chose to calmly reflect reality, rather than getting emotional about the issue.”
